Kate is an associate medical director of the MedStar Health National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare and assistant vice president, Ambulatory Quality & Safety, MedStar Health. Kate’s work focuses on the application of system safety and human factors engineering methods in health care and patient safety, particularly in the areas of adverse event reporting and analysis. As assistant medical director at the Center, she serves to support the clinical aspect of multiple grants and contracts. She is currently principal investigator for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)’s pilot test of the Quality & Safety Review System at MedStar Health. In her quality and safety role, she manages quality and safety initiatives across MedStar’s diverse ambulatory platform. Kate studied medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and received a master’s in public health from the Dartmouth Institute with a focus on developing a systems approach to healthcare improvement. She practices emergency medicine at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and serves as assistant professor in emergency medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Outside of work, Kate enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, running, and knitting.
